Two kinds of home in one street
Yeniköy, a neighbourhood of Döşemealtı, mixes older detached houses with thick walls and small windows and newer low-rise apartment blocks. Even in the same street the two need quite different solutions.
Older houses: deep recesses
Thick walls leave a deep recess between the window and the room. The neatest answer is to fit the blind inside it rather than on the wall:
- Wooden blinds: the 50 mm slats sit neatly in the recess, tilt to steer the light and suit timber frames.
- Roman blinds: the fabric folds up in soft pleats and makes a small window feel warmer.
The wide sill stays free for plants, books or a seat.
Uneven walls
In older houses a recess is rarely the same width at top, middle and bottom. We measure all three and make the blind to the narrowest, and pick fixing points where the wall is solid. For a rough measurement of your own, see how to measure windows; the production measurement is always ours.
Before you throw an old blind away
Many older blinds still have good fabric or slats but a broken cord or mechanism. Ask about blind repair first – a photo is enough for a first opinion.
Newer flats
Windows are larger and the balcony door is in use all day. Zebra blinds switch easily between light and privacy, and sash curtains fixed to the window leaf suit rooms you air often. In the kitchen, a wipe-clean aluminium blind does the job.
Old timber frames or renovated uPVC?
Some older houses in Yeniköy still have their original wooden frames, others have had uPVC windows fitted. Screwing into an old timber sash damages it and works loose over time, so there we fix to the top of the recess instead. In renovated windows the frame may sit further forward or back, which changes whether slats or folds hit the handle – we open and close the window at the visit to check.
Small windows, dark rooms
Small windows in thick walls can leave rooms dim. We choose light fabrics and fit roman blinds at the very top of the recess, so that when raised they clear the glass completely; wooden blinds with slats set horizontal let daylight in almost unhindered.
